I got turned on to doing more public health oriented medicine by doing work abroad, but I was actually between college and medical school and I spent a year in Ecuador working in a Mission Hospital and saw really amazing things. I saw poverty up front and personal. I got to know some wonderful Ecuadorians I learned Spanish. I went back to the United States and was very excited about studying medicine and public health and trying to address inequities in our world. Which I learned from my year abroad and going abroad to meet folks and hearing their perspective from outside of the United States was is really an incredible experience for everybody.
